Buddha Pooja / Prayer and in English -

This spread of flowers, fresh-hued and fragrant,
I offer at the sacred lotus Feet of the Noble Sage.

With flowers in great variety, the Buddha I adore
And by this merit may I gain release.
Even as these flowers must fade,
my body too will pass away.

With lights brightly shining, dispelling the gloom,
I honour the Fully-Awakened, that Light of the Triple World,
Who dispels the gloom (of ignorance).

Perfumed with infinite qualities, the Tathagatha,
fragrant of face and form, I revere with incense,
sweet and penetrating.

To the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Sangha,
in the relics of His body,
enshrined at Lanka, Jambudvipa, Nagaloka
and the Heaven of the Thirty(-three) - in stupas there:
I give honour.
To all the images of Buddha, in all ten directions,
to even hairs and other relics, I give honour.
To the Ten Powers of the Buddha,
to the Cairn of Bodhi, I give honour.
Greetings every stupa, that may stand in any place,
The relics, the Great Bodhi, and Buddha forms everywhere!

Buddhism is just a type of Hinduism ? ? | is Buddhism part of Hinduism ?

Is Buddhism and Hinduism Same ? | Why people say Buddhism is a part of Hinduism ?

ANSWER:
  • No, it is not.
  • Buddhism and Hinduism share many ethical ideas, they  use some common terminology like the words  kamma,  samadhi and nirvana, and they both originated in India.
  • This has led some people to think that they are the same or very similar. But when we look beyond the superficial similarities we see that the two religions are distinctly different.
  • For example, Hindus believe in a supreme God while Buddhists do not. One of the central teachings of Hindu social philosophy is the idea of caste, which Buddhism firmly rejects.  Ritual purification is an important practice in Hinduism but it has no place in Buddhism.
  • In the Buddhist scriptures the Buddha is often portrayed as criticizing what the brahmins, the Hindu priests, taught and they were very critical of some of his ideas.
This would not have happened if Buddhism and Hinduism were the same.

News on Buddhism : A Charity Aims to Bring Buddhist Studies Into the Modern World

A Charity Aims to Bring Buddhist Studies Into the Modern World

By YENNI KWOK
Published: July 29, 2013

HONG KONG — Robert Y.C. Ho, a scion of a historic Hong Kong family, is the chairman of the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, which supports study in the fields of Buddhism, Chinese art and culture. The charity is named after Mr. Ho’s father, who founded it in 2005.

It has given endowments for Buddhist programs at Harvard University, Stanford University and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. In May, it gave a $1.9 million grant to the American Council of Learned Societies for the research and teaching of Buddhist studies.

Why did your father decide to focus on Buddhism?

  • Buddhism was easier because his grandmother, Lady Clara, set up a temple in Hong Kong, Tung Lin Kok Yuen, in 1935 — it later grew to two charity organizations, in Hong Kong and Canada — and there’s a school associated with it. So Buddhism has been part of the family.
  • We also support Chinese art and culture because my father, who grew up in Hong Kong, appreciates Chinese arts — classical, traditional and contemporary.

Buddhist studies are usually associated with history. How do you make them relevant to today?
  • Generally speaking, Buddhist studies in higher institutions have been archaic and old-fashioned, in the sense that it’s mostly text-based, where we have scholars who are experts in Pali, Sanskrit, classical Chinese, Japanese, old languages. They read these texts and they talk about them. A lot of time, it’s not really related to what happens in the real world.
  • But a lot of younger scholars are pushing into new areas, like studying about Buddhism and politics, Buddhism and the environment, conflict resolution, Buddhism and psychology, things like that, and how they manifest in the world. Most of our grants are geared toward the area, which is Buddhism in the contemporary world. This is the area we want to push, to advance the field, to make it relevant to the contemporary audiences.

Why do you work largely with universities and institutions in the West, as opposed to in China or other parts of Asia?

We’re looking for the right partner, the right institution. The standard of scholarship is traditionally, at least in the modern and contemporary era, much higher in North America and the West, so there’s a practical consideration.
  • We’re looking into working in China, but they’re all state-funded institutions. That makes it tricky to find a partner.
  • Southeast Asia is another story. For example, in Thailand and Sri Lanka, they have a category of institutions called Buddhist universities, and they study Buddhism in a traditional way. They take their model back from India in the Middle Ages: They have a big monastery and next to the monastery, they would have a university where they’d teach Buddhist scholarship from a traditional point of view. That’s not what we’re looking for.
  • Through Tung Ling Kok Yuen in Hong Kong, we helped set up the Buddhist Studies Center at Hong Kong University — it was before we started the family foundation. After we’ve started the foundation, most of our grants for Buddhist-related areas are mostly through the foundation.

In Hong Kong, where the foundation is based, you seem to focus on arts and culture education. Why is that?
  • With Hong Kong being mostly Chinese, we see the program as under the umbrella of Chinese art and culture. It’s a basic belief that arts and creativity are part of a human being and the human psyche — that is important to make a person well-rounded, and to have some exposure to that is very important. It’s important not only to individuals but also to a healthy society.
  • The government has some initiatives to try to make Hong Kong a culture or art hub.
  • They are putting a lot of effort in the hardware. That’s good, that’s an important part of it, but you also need the audience.
  • The software is the education program, so that people who go to art events can appreciate, talk about and criticize them. You need that aspect. What we are trying to do is a small bit, but we believe if Hong Kong wants to be a world city, it needs this component.

Women failed to Win the Prince Siddhartha Gautam | Women and Buddha

Father's Plans to Save His Son | Lord Gautam buddha and Father Shuddhodana | Shuddhodana and Siddhartha  | The Failure of the Women to Win the Prince | Women and Buddha.

  • Having heard these words of Udayin, the women strung to the heart, rose even above themselves for the conquest of the prince.
  • But even with their brows, their glances, their coquetries, their smiles, their delicate movements, the girls of the harem did not feel sure of themselves.
  • But they soon regained their confidence through the command of the family priest and the gentle temperament of the prince, and through the power of intoxication and of love.
  • The women then set upon their task and made the prince wander in the woods like an elephant in the forests of Himavat, accompanied by a herd of females.
  • Attended by women, he shone in that pleasant grove, as the sun surrounded by Apsaras in his royal garden.
  • There, some of them urged by passion, pressed him with their full, firm bosoms in gentle collisions.
  • Others violently embraced him after pretending to stumble, then leaning on him with their shoulders drooping down, and with their gentle creeper-like arms.
  • Others with their mouths smelling of spirituous liquor, their lower lips red like copper, whispered in bis ear, "Let my secret be heard."
  • Others, all wet with unguents, as if giving him a command, clasped his hand eagerly and said, "Perform thy rites of. adoration here."
  • Another with her blue garments continually slipping down in pretended intoxication, stood conspicuous with her tongue visible like the night with its lightning lashing.
  • Others with their golden ones tinkling, wandered about here and there, showing him their bodies veiled with thin cloth.
  • Others leaned, holding a mango bough in hand, displaying their bosoms like golden jars.
  • Some, coming from a lotus bed, carrying lotuses and with eyes like lotuses, stood like the lotus goddess Padma, by the side of that lotus-faced prince.
  • Another sang a sweet song easily understood and with the proper gesticulations, rousing him, self-subdued though he was, by her glance, as saying, "O how thou art deluded ! "
  • Another, having armed herself with her bright face, with its brow drawn to its full, imitated his action, as playing the hero.
  • Another, with beautiful, full bosoms, and having her earrings waving in the wind, laughed loudly at him, as if saying, " Catch me, sir, if you can ! "
  • Some, as he was going away, bound him with strings of garlands, others punished him with words like an elephant-driver's hook, gentle yet reproachful.
  • Another, wishing to argue with him, seizing a mango spray, asked, all bewildered with passion, "'This flower, whose is it?"
  • Another, assuming a gait and attitude like that of a man, said to him, " You who are conquered. by a woman, go and conquer this earth! "
  • Then another with rolling eyes, smelling a blue lotus, thus addressed the prince with words slightly indistinct in her excitement :
  • " See, my lord, this mango covered with its honey-scented flowers, where the bird kokila sings, as if imprisoned in a golden cage.
  • "Come and see this Asoka tree, which augments lovers' sorrows, where the bees make a noise as if they were scorched by fire.
  • " Come and see this Tilaka tree, embraced by a slender mango branch, like a man in a white garment by a woman decked with yellow ungents.
  • " Behold the kurubaka in flower, bright like fresh resin-juice, which bends down as if it felt reproached by the colour of women's nails.
  • " Come and see this young Asoka, covered all over with new shoots, which stands as if it were ashamed at the beauty of our hands.
  • " See this lake surrounded by the Sinduvara shrubs growing on its banks, like afair woman reclining, clad in fine white cloth.
  • " See the imperial power of females, yonder Ruddygoose in the water, goes behind, his mate follow-. ing her like a slave.
  • "Come and listen to the notes of the intoxicated Cuckoo as he sings, while another cuckoo sings as if consenting wholly without care.
  • " Would that thine was the intoxication of the birds which the spring produces, and not the thought of a thinking man, ever pondering how wise he is !
  • Thus these young women, their souls carried away by love, assailed the prince with all kinds of stratagems.
  • But although thus attacked, he, having his sense guarded by self-control; neither rejoiced nor smiled.
  • Having seen them in their real condition, the Prince pondered with an undisturbed and steadfast mind.
  • " What is it that these women lack that they perceive not that youth is fickle? For old age will destroy whatever beauty has."
  • This round of blandishment went on for months and years with no results.

Father's Plans to Save His Son | Lord Gautam buddha and Father Shuddhodana | Shuddhodana and Siddhartha

  • While the king was happy to see his son married and thus enter the life of a householder the prophecy of the sage Asita continued to haunt him.
  • To prevent the prophecy from coming true, he thought of getting him engrossed in the pleasures and carnal joys of life.
  • With this object in view Suddhodana built three luxurious palaces for his son to live in, one for summer, one for the rainy season and one for winter, furnished with all the requirements and excitements for a full amorous life.
  • Each palace was surrounded by an extensive garden beautifully laid out with all kinds of trees and flowers.
  • In consultation with his family priest Udayin, he thought of providing a harem for the prince with very beautiful imnates.
  • Suddhodana then told Udayin to advise the girls how to go about the business of winning over the prince to the pleasures of life.
  • Having collected the inmates of the harem, Udayin first advised them how they should win over the prince.
  • Addressing them he said : " Ye are all skilled in all the graceful arts, ye are proficient in understanding the language of amorous sentiments, ye are possessed of beauty and gracefulness, ye are thorough masters in your own styles.
  • " With these graces of yours, ye are able to move even sages who have lost all their desires, and to ensnare even the gods, who are charmed by heavenly nymphs.
  • " By your skill in expressing the heart's feelings, by your coquetry, your grace, and your perfect beauty ye are able to enrapture even women, how much more easily men.
  • "Thus, skilled as ye are, each set in your own proper sphere, it should not be beyond your reach to captivate and capture the prince and hold him in your bondage.
  • " Any timid action on your part would be fit for new brides whose eyes are closed through shame.
  • "What though this hero be, great by his exalted glory, yet ' great is the might of woman.' Let this be your firm resolve.
  • " In olden time a great seer, hard to be conquered even by gods, was spurned by a harlot, the beauty of Kasi, planting her feet upon him.
  • "And the great seer Visvamitra, though plunged in a profound penance, was carried captive for ten years in the forests by the nymph Ghritaki.
  • " Many such seers as these have women brought to naught, how much more then a delicate prince in the first flower of his age ?
  • " This being so, boldly put forth your efforts that the posterity of the king's family may not be turned away from him.
  • "Ordinary women captivate simple men; but they are truly women, who subdue the nature of high and hard."
